Conjuring up adventures of rogue archaeologists, cursed tombs and great and powerful Pharaohs reaching out from the grave to haunt those that would disturb their sleep, are all the themes that lend themselves to an escape room about ancient Egypt. The history of Egypt has fascinated mankind for many years, as witnessed in the making of many movies about this period in history. An escape room that forms a gateway into the lives of these ancient civilisations, if only for an hour, is almost certain to capture escape room enthusiast’s imagination.
Egyptian characters from history and the movies have brought these characters into our homes and entertained and terrorised us in equal measure. Pharaohs like Tutankhamun, King Tut, Ramses and, of course, Cleopatra, the last Pharaoh all feature in the telling of tales of adventure, riches and death. Then there are the Egyptian gods, kind, vengeful and mighty, which are all excellent content for an Egyptian escape room theme. Add to that, those curses so prominent in films, mummies that come alive and archaeologists that risk life and limb trying to raid sacred pyramids and you have adventure, intrigue and a scare factor that will make any escape room irresistible.
Settings for an Egyptian escape room are usually set in ancient Egypt. They are often based inside a pyramid, a Pharaoh’s palace, the desert or boat on the Nile. There is a particular style and colours that immediately identify an Egyptian theme and these should be observed to create an immediate link to all things Egyptian. You don’t want your players to have to guess where they are if you want the experience to be immersive. Then come the sounds and the voiceovers - all critical in creating an authentic Egyptian feel.
For an Egyptian escape room aimed at children, the emphasis is on an adventure with limited references to anything too scary. Although, we shouldn’t underestimate children’s capacity for being able to handle the scare factor. It’s a case of enough, but not too much. Lighting in a child-orientated Egyptian escape room is also brighter and voiceovers less threatening. Clues and puzzles are reduced in difficulty so that achieving an escape is increased. But, making the escape room too easy will create a lack of challenge, and players may lose interest.
On the other hand, when an Egyptian escape room is aimed at adults, there are virtually no holds barred - the more threatening and frightening, the better. There is plenty to go at when it comes to scary Egyptian characters and stories from the film industry. Being trapped in a pyramid, or a tomb are two such ideas and fear can be ramped up by innovative sound effects and threats in the voiceovers. It’s all in the name of an escape room being totally interactive and immersive.
A five-star escape room facility that is highly immersive, interactive and captures your imagination the minute you enter the premises is ‘Escape This’.
Not yet! Whilst we can't promise anything Escape This are opening new rooms at a rate of one every 6-8 weeks. So, it's inevitable that the world of Eyptian pyramids and mummies will reach Perth in the not too distant future.
You certainly can. At Escape This we encourage you to do so. Just make sure that whetever you wear it is comfortable and you have closed shoes.
As a general rule of thumb Egyptian themed escape rooms are suitable for both adults and children. Although it is best to check in advance some may focus on a horror theme and/or feature jump scares!
